Knowing how to read a ruler is something that most of us learn as kids at school. The fact is though that we don't think that we will ever use rulers outside school; this is far from the truth; in many cases we might need a ruler so as to measure the dimensions of a room, furniture or a painting. Accurate measures are needed in many occasions. You never know when or why you will need to use a ruler, so knowing how to read it is always useful.

In order to learn how to read a ruler, you have to be familiar with the little symbols on the ruler that represent the unit used for measurement. You have to be careful with units; since there is no universal metrical system used in all countries, you have to figure out what is the unit of the ruler. Usually a ruler denotes the unit used - if you are in the US it is probably inches, in Europe and Asia it is cm or mm. That is easy to find out; it will be there, on the ruler.

If you see the symbol of " then this refers to inches, while the ' refers to feet. If for instance you see 2'-10", then this means 2 feet and ten inches. The standard ruler in the US is divided in feet and inches. One foot consists of twelve inches. In most of the rulers you will find a relatively longer line and four smaller ones. If you are counting in inches, then each small line is 1/16 of an inch. 16lines are one inch. If your ruler is in centimetres, then each small line refers to millimetres or mm. ten millimetres compound on centimetre. This may sound confusing, but if you actually take a ruler and look closely you will figure it out in no time.

Always keep in mind that when you measure something you need to place the beginning of ruler, its one side to the beginning of the item you are measuring, so as not to mix the length.

After this time apply another coat and then wait a further 24 hours before adding the final coat and sanding it.
